Artificial vs. Real Flowers

October 29, 2007

Many brides today are struggling over the great floral dilemma: Should she choose fresh or artificial flowers. The deciding factors in this dilemma usually boil down to cost, appearance, durability, and convenience.

Most brides will notice a considerable cost savings when choosing silk. It is not unusual for a fresh bridal bouquet to cost more than an entire wedding party’s silk flowers. Keep in mind, some stems can still be very expensive, even in silk. Those that tend to be expensive are large, high-quality roses, calla lilies, and orchids. As a less expensive alternative to roses, try cabbage roses or ranunculus.

Many brides worry that the artificial flowers will look fake. This, again, depends on the choice of flowers. Some flowers, such as calla lilies, are very difficult to replicate with a natural look. Even so, most fresh callas will run about $5.00 per stem, compared to $3.00 per stem for artificial callas. Other silk flowers, such as roses, can appear every bit as realistic as fresh flowers. A good, realistic, silk rose should run from $1.50-$6.00 per stem.

Should you choose silk flowers and wish to have a hand-tied bouquet, be sure to request a stem holder when talking to your florist. These holders allow the handle to appear to be a large bunch of stems, instead of a thin, wire handle.

A wonderful alternative to silk flowers are latex stems. These flowers are moldable and will mimic the natural texture of the flower much better than silk. Latex flowers also hold their shape very well and can be arranged more precisely. Although these stems may cost slightly more than silk, they are well worth the added expense.

Other brides will choose fresh flowers because they want their flowers to smell good. The important question to ask yourself would be, “Is the smell worth the price escalation?”

As stated before, durability is something you will need to consider when choosing your flowers. Artificial flowers will not wilt, they will not discolor, and broken stems do not usually occur. And, when the wedding is over, you will have a wonderful keepsake without the additional preservation expenses.

Perhaps one of the best things about silk flowers is the convenience they afford. They can be ordered long before the wedding and stored until the big day. This also leaves time for corrections, should your florist make a mistake.

For the bride who can let go of the pretty smell of fresh flowers and the touch of a rose petal, silk flowers are a very affordable and convenient alternative to fresh flowers.

Does China have her national flower? If so, what is it?

October 11, 2007

China does not have an “official” national flower, but the tree peony can be regarded as a national favorite. The tree peony (mudan) received the most votes in a survey conducted in 1994 in every district in China asking people to select a National Flower – a high honor for the peony in a country that loves flowers.

Each spring Henan Province’s city of Luoyang – the capital of several Chinese dynasties in central China – holds a 10-day peony festival and trade show (April 15-25). Varieties of peonies from overseas are displayed besides the some 600 varieties of peonies developed in Luoyang itself.

But many cities in China hold flower festivals in which the peony is featured. During the Chinese lunar New Year celebrations in Shanghai this year, for instance, some 400,000 flowers including hyacinths, cyclamens and tree peonies from China, Europe and Japan were on display at that city’s flower trade show and market.

For further information on the peony itself, much information is available on the web.

China Discovery : Traditional Sports and Activities

October 11, 2007

It is inevitable that with such a long history China should have developed several unique and traditional sports and pastimes. While some are practiced widely by the Han majority as well as the minority groups who make up these groups and reflect their own cultures. As the country is so large and the various minorities are separated by vast distances it is not surprising that they have their own special ways in which to express their vigor and enthusiasm.

Almost all the traditional sports were derived from productive activity. The Mongolians, Tibetans and Kazaks inhabit vast natural grasslands and horsemanship is vital to their existence. Consequently their gift for riding and shooting has given rise to their forms of sport. The people who live in agricultural communities or who rely on hunting for their livelihood are good at climbing, wrestling, jumping, shooting and so on.

Many of these activities are accompanied by singing, dancing, and instrumental performances that are art forms in their own right. They are mostly held as part of the festivals like Spring Festival and other days of significance. The Bamboo Pole Dance of the Li ethnic group is an example. The participants squat or kneel in pairs opposite each other and hold the end of a bamboo poles in each hand. The couples bring the poles together and apart in time with the rhythm of musical accompaniment. Graceful dancers perform between the moving poles, ensuring that they maintain a rhythm that is in time with the poles so as to avoid being trapped between them. This is a very skillful and entertaining sight.

Aerial : Dragon boat racing is always an exciting highlight during festival. This will involve the use of swings, ropes and the springboard, etc.
Equestrian: These include horse racing, polo and other events to test riding skills.
Aquatic: These encompass swimming, diving and boating events such as the famous dragon boat races.
Land Based: Martial arts, wrestling in a variety of forms, archery, football and trials of strength such as tug-of-war.

To maintain and encourage the development of these colorful sports, provincial and even national meetings have been held. China’s National Games of Minority Nationality’s Traditional Sports is one example and is now held every four years. The seventh of these very successful meetings was held in 2003.

The following are the sports which are among the most popular among the people of China.
